Joppatowne High School is "one of a kind"

Joppatowne High School in Maryland starts the first pre-college
program in "Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness"

From the article, "About 110 students expressed interest in signing up, and 61 10th-graders — 38 male and 23 female — were selected."

Here's follow-up story in the USA Today about the interesting new program at Joppatowne HS. Evidently, there are a lot of folks out there (perhaps mainly liberals?) who find this program unpalatable and a waste of resources.

I disagree. There's nothing wrong with instilling values of preparedness in youth. Perhaps when they grow up and take control of the government, they will value protecting human lives against natural disasters as equally as protecting lives against "terrorists."

I did some additional digging and here's some school preparedness resources (and likely a source of funding for the Joppatowne HS program).

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offers a wide-range of emergency preparedness resources to help schools create safe and secure environments for their students. Emergency preparedness is an important responsibility shared by all individuals as well as communities, including schools. In order to advance school preparedness nationwide, DHS offers several planning and training resources to help local schools prepare comprehensive all-hazard emergency preparedness plans that are exercised regularly and developed in partnership with their community leaders and first responders.

I'm not sure I get the Hitler analogies, but in the interest of fairness ... here is another view of the Joppatowne program.

I'm starting to think that we need to substitute the phrase "all hazards preparedness" where possible to reduce the number of references to the Fatherland and the 3rd Reich. (which in my opinion are ridiculous, but I am one of many many millions of people of the country I love)
